They were not treated as badly as the Chinese as they were seen as anti-British and as potential allies against the British. India was rebelling against colonial rule at that point of time and so were Malay dominant countries such as Indonesia. Therefore, the Japanese wanted to work with the Malays and Chinese to keep the British out.

Shortage of housing – the intensive bombardment during the Japanese Occupation had destroyed most houses and thousand were left homeless.
Shortage of food – Food was in acute shortage. The harbour, as a result of the Japanese bombardment, was blocked with sunken ships and trade had come to a standstill.
Diseases, deaths and poor living conditions – with infrastructure destroyed, pipes were faulty, water was contaminated, leading to a sharp rise in diseases and deaths.

They were against the merger because Malaya was a fiercely anti-Communist nation and the Communists knew that if the merger went underway, they will be wiped out. They were also unhappy with the terms of the merger as they felt that merging with predominantly Malay Malaya will mean the Chinese in Singapore will lose their equal standing.
